Goodmans Field is one of my favourite locations for family photo sessions. It photographs beautifully in every season, offering rich textures, natural layers and constantly changing colours. With its old oak trees, open green space, gentle pathways and charming little bridges, it provides the perfect balance between structured composition and relaxed countryside atmosphere.

Because this meadow is right on my doorstep in Denmead, I’ve come to know it intimately — how the light moves, where the best sunset pockets appear, and which corners glow in autumn. That local knowledge makes a real difference when planning an outdoor photo session. You’re not just choosing a pretty field; you’re choosing a setting that has depth, variety and dependable photographic potential.

If you’re considering an outdoor family session in Hampshire or West Sussex, here’s everything you need to know.

Why Goodmans Field Works So Well for Family Photography

One of the biggest advantages of Goodmans Field is its natural variety within a compact, walkable area. In a single session, we can capture:

  • Open meadow portraits with soft background blur
  • Framed images beneath mature oak trees
  • Playful walking shots along the pathways
  • Intimate moments on or near the small wooden bridges
  • Seasonal detail images (wild grasses, fallen leaves, spring blossoms)

This variety means your gallery feels rich and complete without needing to travel between multiple locations. For families with young children, this is especially helpful — less walking, less pressure, more natural moments.

The space is large enough to feel open and peaceful, yet contained enough that little ones can explore safely while still staying within view. That balance is gold during a relaxed family session.

Best Time of Year to Photograph at The Meadow

Goodmans Field truly transforms throughout the year, which is why I return again and again.

Spring: Fresh greens, delicate blossoms and soft evening light. Perfect for light, airy family portraits.

Summer: Longer evenings and golden grass tones. Ideal for warm sunset sessions and flowing dresses.

Autumn: My personal favourite. The oak trees turn beautiful shades of amber and copper, creating depth and texture. Autumn sessions here feel cinematic and cosy.

Winter: Even without leaves, the tree shapes create stunning silhouettes, and low winter sun adds drama and softness at the same time.

No matter the season, the meadow offers visual interest and natural colour harmony — something that works beautifully with my calm, natural editing style.

What to Wear for a Photo Session at Goodmans Field

Because the meadow has earthy greens and warm tones, clothing choices matter — but don’t overthink it.

Neutral colours such as cream, beige, soft brown, muted sage, dusty blue or gentle rust work beautifully. Avoid very bright neon colours or bold logos, as they distract from the natural setting.

Flowing fabrics photograph particularly well here, especially in summer when there’s a gentle breeze. Layers also work wonderfully in autumn — think cardigans, scarves and textured knits.

If you book a session with me, I always provide styling guidance tailored to the season and your family.

What to Expect During Your Outdoor Session

Outdoor sessions at Goodmans Field are relaxed and child-led. We walk, talk, pause, play and let moments unfold naturally. I’ll gently guide you into flattering light and suggest small prompts rather than stiff poses.

For example:

  • Walking hand in hand through the meadow
  • A cuddle beneath the oak tree
  • Children running ahead on the path
  • Sitting together on a blanket

These prompts create movement and genuine expressions, which result in timeless images.

Sessions usually take place in the late afternoon or early evening when the light is soft and flattering. The meadow really shines during golden hour.

Is Goodmans Field Suitable for All Ages?

Yes — and that’s one of the reasons I love it.

It works beautifully for:

  • Families with toddlers and older children
  • Maternity sessions
  • Couples
  • Extended family gatherings
  • Branding sessions with a natural feel

The pathways are accessible, and the ground is mostly even, which makes it manageable for grandparents too.

Practical Information

There is a small free car park, which makes access simple and stress-free. The location is quiet compared to busier parks, so sessions feel private and calm.

Because it isn’t heavily signposted, it can be easy to miss the entrance — which is why I always provide detailed directions when you book. Please be aware that there are usually people walking dogs in the field.

How to Find Goodmans Field in Denmead

Travelling from Waterlooville to Denmead on Hambledon Road (which is a very long road), continue towards Denmead village. Just before a small roundabout, you will see a turn on your left. The small free car park is not clearly signposted and can be easy to miss at first. It will be on your left-hand side.

If you miss the turn, simply continue to the roundabout and turn around.
