Congratulations — you have booked your outdoor maternity session, and I could not be more excited to capture this beautiful chapter with you. Because preparation makes such a difference, I have put together this simple guide to help you feel relaxed, confident and completely ready on the day.
When Is the Best Time for Your Maternity Session?
The ideal time to book your outdoor maternity photoshoot is between 28 and 34 weeks. At this stage, your bump is beautifully visible and most mums-to-be still feel comfortable moving around outdoors.
Later in pregnancy, many women naturally feel more tired or begin to retain water, so earlier sessions are often more enjoyable. Therefore, if you are expecting twins or have a high-risk pregnancy, I recommend scheduling your session slightly earlier than 28 weeks.
What Time of Day Will We Shoot?
Outdoor maternity sessions usually take place during golden hour — the hour before sunset. This is when the light is at its softest and most flattering, which means your images will have that warm, dreamy quality you have likely seen in my portfolio.
Because of this, the exact time of your session will vary slightly depending on the season. I will always confirm the start time with you in advance.
What Should You Wear?
Clothing is one of the most important parts of preparing for your outdoor maternity photoshoot, so it is worth spending a little time thinking about this in advance.
My style is soft, natural and timeless — so earthy tones, neutrals and flowing fabrics work beautifully in outdoor settings. I would suggest preparing two outfits:
- One more fitted look to beautifully show your bump
- One softer, flowing or romantic outfit for movement and variety
Where to Shop for Maternity Outfits
You don’t need to spend a fortune on maternity clothes for your photoshoot. In fact, some of my favourite outfits have come from high street shops or pieces clients already had in their wardrobe.
For dresses, have a look at:
- H&M MAMA
- Seraphine
- Nobody’s Child
- JoJo Maman Bébé
- ASOS Maternity
- Next Maternity
- New Look Maternity
- Bump & Milk
- Vinted (a fantastic option if you only plan to wear the outfit once)
For a more relaxed and natural look, linen trousers paired with a fitted vest top, bodysuit, knit cardigan or open shirt can photograph beautifully.
When choosing clothing, look for:
- Natural fabrics such as linen, cotton and knitwear
- Soft textures
- Flowing movement
- Neutral or earthy colours
- Clothing that gently highlights your bump
I would generally avoid:
- Very shiny or satin-like fabrics that can reflect light unpredictably
- Large logos or visible branding
- Neon colours
- Busy patterns
- Clothing that feels overly tight or uncomfortable
- Matching everyone in exactly the same colour
The goal is not perfection. Instead, think about creating a harmonious look where colours, textures and styles complement one another while still feeling like you.
Colours That Photograph Well Outdoors
Soft, muted tones always look stunning in natural light. The best colours include:
- Cream, white and beige
- Soft browns, olive and earthy tones
- Muted blues, dusty pinks and soft greys
Bold patterns, bright colours and large logos tend to distract from the overall feel of the images, so I recommend avoiding these where possible.
Outfit Inspiration for Mums-to-Be
Not sure where to start? Here are some outfit ideas that photograph beautifully outdoors:
- Fitted maternity dress
- Flowing maxi dress
- Oversized knit cardigan with a fitted base layer
- Open white shirt
- Fitted vest top with jeans worn slightly under the bump
- Neutral bodysuit with a long skirt

A Note on Underwear
This is a small but important detail. I strongly recommend bringing a smooth, nude-coloured underwear set as this works under most fabrics without showing through.
Hair, Skin and Nails
Professional hair and makeup are completely optional, however many mums-to-be find that a little pampering beforehand helps them feel more relaxed and confident in front of the camera.
If you do choose professional makeup, soft and natural finishes tend to photograph far better than heavier evening looks. Fresh hair, neutral nails and well-moisturised skin all make a real difference in your images.
Please avoid:
- Strong fake tan
- Glitter body products
- Heavy translucent powder, as this can sometimes appear oddly in photographs
- Tight clothing directly before the session if possible, as it can leave marks on the skin
What Should My Partner Wear?
Partners should aim for smart casual clothing in plain, neutral tones. The goal is for everyone to look coordinated rather than perfectly matching — so you do not need to plan identical outfits.
Colours that work well: white, cream, beige, navy, grey, olive and soft blue tones.
Please avoid: sportswear, large logos, bright trainers and busy patterns.
Are Children Welcome?
Absolutely — older children are very welcome to join the session, and outdoor maternity sessions are often easier and more relaxed for little ones than studio environments.
One of the best things you can do is not make a big deal of it. Children who are told they are going to a photoshoot and must behave often feel the pressure — and that shows in the images. Instead, try framing it as something exciting and low-key at the same time.
Tell them you are going on a walk to meet Ania. Depending on their age, you can build a little adventure around it — looking for shells on the beach, spotting bunnies in the fields, finding the best stick, or simply running ahead on a woodland path. When children are engaged and having fun, they completely forget the camera is there, and those are often the most beautiful, natural images of all.
To help things go smoothly, I also recommend:
- Avoiding over-tired times of day if possible
- Bringing a small snack and water
- Keeping their outfits simple and comfortable
Simple plain dresses in soft colours work beautifully for girls. For boys, neutral tops with jeans or chinos photograph best. I also offer morning sessions for families with young kids.
What Shoes Should I Bring?
Depending on the location we choose, your session may involve walking through fields, woodland paths, grassy areas or along the coast. Because of this, I always recommend bringing comfortable walking shoes between locations, alongside any footwear you would like to wear in the photographs.
Some photographs may also be taken barefoot, depending on the setting and season — so do not worry if elegant shoes are not entirely practical for every shot.
What Happens During the Session?
Please do not worry if you feel nervous or awkward in front of the camera — almost everyone does at first. Throughout your outdoor maternity photoshoot, I will guide you gently every step of the way. I will direct you on where to stand, how to move and what to do with your hands.
Rather than stiff posing, I use movement, walking and natural connection between you and your partner or children. This means your photographs will feel authentic, relaxed and true to you — not staged or forced.
Sessions last approximately one hour and we will typically work through your two outfits during that time.
Where Will the Session Take Place?
As a Chichester maternity photographer, I work across a range of beautiful locations throughout Chichester, West Sussex and Hampshire — from coastal paths and open countryside to woodland settings and open fields.
We will choose a location together that suits your style and vision. If you are unsure, I am always happy to suggest options based on the look and feel you are hoping to achieve.
