Old Portsmouth Engagement Shoot at the Hotwalls

Some locations simply do half the work for you. The Hotwalls in Old Portsmouth is one of them. Recently, I met C & J there for their Old Portsmouth engagement shoot, and the evening delivered everything. Ancient stone walls, a moody sky over the Solent, and two people who clearly adore each other. Even better, this session was a prelude to their wedding at Marwell Hotel, right beside Marwell Zoo. But more on that later.

Why Choose the Hotwalls for an Old Portsmouth Engagement Shoot

First, a little background. The Hotwalls sits at the very tip of Old Portsmouth, where the city meets the sea. The fortifications here date back centuries, and the Round Tower and Square Tower still stand guard over the harbour entrance. As a result, you get an incredible variety of backdrops within a five-minute walk.

Think weathered stone arches, a shingle beach, sweeping sea views and charming period streets. Consequently, every set of photos feels varied, even though we barely moved. Wightlink ferries drift past in the background, too, which adds a lovely sense of place. For couples who love Portsmouth, few spots tell the city’s story better.

A Relaxed Evening by the Sea

this looks like the stone steps grid, not the Round Tower door shot. If so, its alt text should be: Engaged couple cuddling and chatting on the historic stone steps at Old Portsmouth

C & J arrived a little nervous, as most couples do. However, that never lasts long. We started with a slow wander along the sea wall, simply chatting about their plans. Within minutes, the laughter took over and the camera became an afterthought.

Then we explored the arches beneath the Square Tower. The soft evening glow bounced off the old stone beautifully, and C’s red hair caught the light in every frame. Meanwhile, the doorway framing the beach gave us a striking silhouette shot, one of my favourites from the whole session.

Afterwards, we headed down to the shingle beach below the walls. C & J sat close together, watching the water. Because they felt so comfortable by then, the images from this part of the session look completely unposed. In fact, they mostly were. My job was simply to be in the right place when the giggles happened.

Finally, we finished on the steps and along the quieter streets of Old Portsmouth. Golden light, ripped jeans, a bold leaf-print shirt and two huge smiles. Honestly, what more could a photographer ask for.

From Engagement Shoot to a Marwell Hotel Wedding

Here is the part I love most. An engagement session is never just a lovely evening out. Above all, it works as a rehearsal for your wedding photos. C & J learned how I work, how little posing I actually ask for, and how quickly an hour passes.

Later, they married at Marwell Hotel, tucked beside Marwell Zoo near Winchester. Because we had already worked together, their wedding day photos felt effortless from the very first frame. They knew exactly what to expect, so they relaxed straight away. That confidence shows in every image.

Planning Your Own Engagement Session in Portsmouth

Thinking about your own shoot? Here are a few things that helped this session shine.

Engaged couple laughing by the Round Tower door and embracing on the steps in Old Portsmouth

Firstly, timing matters. We chose early evening, when the light softens and the crowds thin out. Secondly, wear something that feels like you. C & J picked relaxed outfits they loved, and their personalities shine through as a result. Thirdly, trust the location. Old Portsmouth offers arches, beach, sea wall and streets, so there is no need to rush between spots.

Most importantly, come ready to have fun together. The best engagement photos capture how you make each other laugh. Everything else is just a backdrop.

Old Portsmouth Engagement Shoot FAQ

Where are the best engagement photo locations in Portsmouth?

The Hotwalls and Round Tower in Old Portsmouth top my list. Additionally, Southsea Beach, Canoe Lake and the streets around Spice Island all photograph beautifully. Each offers a different mood, from historic stone to open seafront.

What should we wear for a seaside engagement shoot?

Choose outfits you feel completely yourselves in. Coordinating colours work better than matching exactly. Also, bring layers, because the seafront breeze can surprise you even in summer. I also have a guide on what to wear for photo shoot

How long does an engagement session last?

Most sessions run around an hour. That gives us plenty of time to explore several backdrops without anyone feeling rushed.

When is the best time of day for photos at the Hotwalls?

Early evening wins every time. The light turns soft and golden, and the daytime visitors head home. Consequently, we get the arches and sea wall almost to ourselves.

Do you include an engagement shoot with wedding photography?

Yes. Every full coverage wedding booking includes a pre-wedding session, so we can get to know each other before the big day. It makes a real difference to how relaxed you feel.
