Maternity Photoshoot at West Wittering Beach — Worth the Drive from London

Some sessions stay with you long after the sand has been shaken out of the camera bag. This maternity photoshoot at West Wittering was one of them. Soft evening light, white lace, weathered beach huts, and a couple so at ease with each other that my job was simply to capture what was already there.

What made this session even more special is that this lovely couple travelled all the way from London for it. That is around a one and a half to two hour drive each way. When they arrived and saw the beach at golden hour, they understood immediately why it was worth every mile.

Why This Couple Travelled from London for Their Maternity Session

There are plenty of photographers in London. So why make the journey to the West Sussex coast?

The answer is in the images. West Wittering offers something no city location can: miles of soft white sand, iconic pastel beach huts, sculptural wooden groynes, and an open horizon that turns golden in the evening. Consequently, it has become one of my signature maternity locations, and sessions here look unlike anything shot in a park or on a city street.

For expectant parents in London, the maths is simple. A two hour drive buys you a backdrop that feels like the Mediterranean, photographed at the most flattering time of day. Many of my maternity clients now travel from London, Surrey, and across Hampshire for exactly this reason.

Golden Hour Among the Beach Huts

We timed this maternity photoshoot at West Wittering for the final two hours before sunset. This is when the light becomes soft, warm, and endlessly forgiving. The beach also empties out in the evening, so we had the huts and the shoreline almost entirely to ourselves.

We started at the famous white beach huts, moved through the dunes, and finished against the weathered groynes with the sea glowing behind us. Each spot offers a completely different feel, yet everything sits within a short barefoot walk.

Because maternity sessions should never feel rushed, we took our time. There were breaks, laughter, and plenty of quiet moments between poses. That relaxed pace shows in the final gallery.

What to Wear for a Beach Maternity Photoshoot

This mum-to-be chose a white lace two-piece with flowing trousers, and it could not have been more perfect. Here is why it worked so well:

  • White and cream tones complement the sand, the huts, and the soft evening light
  • Lace and sheer fabrics move beautifully in the sea breeze and photograph with lovely texture
  • A gently exposed bump keeps the focus exactly where it belongs
  • Bare feet always look better than shoes on sand

Her husband wore a simple white linen shirt with dark shorts. As a result, the two outfits felt coordinated without being matching. If you are unsure what to wear for your own session, I always help with outfit planning beforehand.

When to Book Your Maternity Photoshoot

The ideal window for a maternity session is between 28 and 34 weeks. By this stage your bump is beautifully defined, yet you are still comfortable enough to enjoy a relaxed hour on the beach.

Evening slots at West Wittering are limited during the summer months, because golden hour only comes once a day. Therefore, I recommend booking your date early in your second trimester to secure the timing you want.
