For this family session, I was invited to Southsea in Portsmouth, Hampshire. The family loved the area, so photographing them in their favourite places felt personal and special. As soon as they booked, I knew it would be a fun morning filled with laughter, movement, and beautiful light.

Photographing Families in Beloved Local Spots

Southsea is full of spots that work brilliantly for family photography. During this session, we moved around to several locations:

Working with Natural Light

The session took place just before midday. That can feel daunting for photographers because of the stronger light. But with some creativity and careful positioning, the results were beautiful. Using the shade of the pier, the café walls, and backlighting, I managed to soften the sunlight. The children’s laughter and movement gave me endless opportunities to capture real expressions.

This is something I love about family photography outdoors: nothing is staged for too long. Instead, I guide the family gently from one spot to another, photographing in-between moments. Those little glances, silly giggles, or the way parents naturally look at their children – they are the true heart of the session.
