Some sessions feel less like a photoshoot and more like a lovely walk that happens to be photographed. This one was exactly that.

On a soft, overcast autumn afternoon, I met this gorgeous couple at Butser Hill, the highest point of the South Downs in Hampshire. They brought the third member of the family with them — their whippet — and together we wandered the hilltop paths, golden grass underfoot and rolling views in every direction.

If you are thinking about an engagement photoshoot in Hampshire, this session shows you exactly what to expect. Relaxed, unposed, and completely yours.

Why Butser Hill Is Perfect for an Engagement Shoot

Butser Hill sits just outside Petersfield, within Queen Elizabeth Country Park, and it is one of my favourite locations in Hampshire. The views stretch for miles across the South Downs. The light up there is beautifully soft, and in autumn the whole hillside turns to shades of gold and bronze.

It is also wonderfully practical. Parking is easy, the walk from the car is gentle, and there is space to roam. That freedom matters, because the best engagement photos happen when you forget the camera is there.

We used the old wooden gates, the open ridgeline, and the long grass. Nothing was staged. We simply walked, chatted, and paused wherever the landscape offered something lovely.
Bringing Your Dog to Your Engagement Shoot

Yes, you can bring your dog. In fact, I would encourage it.
Their whippet was part of this session from the first frame to the last — trotting alongside them on the paths, flopping into the grass with a stick, and squeezing into the cuddles. Dogs bring out the most natural laughter in a couple, and those in-between moments often become favourite images.

Butser Hill is ideal for dogs too. It is open access land with plenty of room to run, which means your dog gets a brilliant walk and you get photographs of your little family exactly as it is.
What to Wear for an Autumn Engagement Photoshoot

This couple got it spot on, so let me borrow their example. She wore a long olive-green coat, and he layered a navy gilet over a soft checked shirt. Muted, layered, and comfortable.
Autumn on the Downs calls for tones that sit gently against the landscape — olive, rust, navy, cream, and warm neutrals. Layers keep you comfortable on a breezy hilltop, and boots are a must. If it looks like something you would wear on a beautiful country walk, it will photograph perfectly.
Your Engagement Shoot Is Included with Full Day Wedding Coverage

Here is something many couples do not realise. When you book my full day wedding photography, an engagement session like this one is included — at no extra cost.
It is one of the most valuable parts of the package. By the time your wedding day arrives, you already know how I work, you know how it feels to be photographed, and we have met properly rather than for the first time at the ceremony. Couples consistently tell me their wedding photos feel more relaxed because of it.

Everything I offer is flat-fee and all-inclusive. No hidden extras, no upsells — just beautiful photographs and a straightforward experience. To find out more please visit my main wedding page
And this story has a wonderful next chapter — I later photographed this couple’s wedding at The Tithe Barn in Petersfield. Read their wedding post here.
