A Dream Come True: My Journey to Becoming an Award-Winning Photographer

Receiving the Gold Award from SWPP represents so much more than recognition; it’s a personal goal I set for myself years ago. Back when I first joined SWPP, I would wait eagerly each month for the magazine to arrive, flipping through the award-winning photographs with admiration. I remember thinking, “One day, I would love to see my own work here.” Achieving this has reignited my passion to continually improve, perfect my skills, and push myself creatively.

This award-winning image took over three hours of meticulous work, layering, and brushwork to achieve the effect I envisioned. It’s unlike anything I’ve created before, and I’m incredibly proud of the final result.

Exploring the Painterly Technique

The awarded image has a unique painterly look that adds a timeless feel to the portrait. This technique, deeply close to my heart, offers a quality where you could imagine the piece originating from any era. The painterly approach brings a depth and richness that isn’t bound by time—a look that transcends trends and fads, creating a piece that feels classic yet fresh.

The painterly style is particularly special to me as it connects back to my grandfather, an exceptional, multi-award-winning oil painter. Growing up, I was inspired by his artistry, which spurred my own creative pursuits in painting and drawing before I found photography. I loved working with pastels, which were rich in texture yet not as messy as oils! These early experiences influenced my artistic vision, allowing me to incorporate painterly techniques into serene maternity portraits and richly textured newborn images. Image has been created with special digital technique, which I worked out over time. (I even created a course!) Check HERE

In this latest piece, I aimed to merge photography with painterly effects to create a portrait that feels deeply personal and artistic. Each brushstroke and layer added depth, drawing inspiration from classical portraiture while embracing modern techniques. The Gold Award from SWPP has encouraged me to pursue these creative methods further, pushing boundaries to capture memories in a style that feels meaningful, unique, and lasting.
